Applied Management - Full time training course

Training theme: How to Develop and Manage a Knowledge-creating Company from a Strategic Perspective.

This is a full time course, mainly intended for international students coming to the UK, with the main purpose of learning how to start and manage a knowledge-creating company and to run a profitable business, competing in the knowledge economy. hands on keyboard

It is a student-led programme, whose aim is to enable the students to develop a practical approach to starting their own business and developing their own business models.

The duration of this course is from three to five years, dependant on the individual.

Objectives of the Programme:

  1. To map out the dynamics of various industries and identify an appropriate one to study, which will allow the student to develop their business
  2. To analysis and understand the macro environment of the selected industry
  3. To develop profiles and explain the management structures of various organisations working in the selected industry
  4. To gain a basic understanding about strategy, marketing and sales structures of the selected industry
  5. To develop an understanding of the strategic financial structure of the industry
  6. To develop and create a knowledge-creating company in the selected industry
  7. To become proficient in English for effective communication and management
  8. To develop interpersonal skills required for effective management

The training programme has been designed on Aziz’ principle, known as “SCALE”:

The SCALE Model

  • Sensing and searching: to find the industry, which you want to choose as your career
  • Communicating and discussing: to share ideas and get clarity of thoughts
  • Applying: to get practical experience and observe the real world
  • Learning and reflecting: to combine theory with practice and develop another loop for further understanding and progression
  • Evaluating: to evaluate the whole process to redefine the SCALE

Structure of the programme

Foundation stage (one year duration)

During this stage students will study the literature on management, marketing and accounting, and sharpen their communication skills in English.
Students will be required to improve their ability to speak fluently and write good English.
Students will also be able to understand the concepts of various “economies” – the industrial economy, the information economy and the knowledge economy. For practical experience, students will be given the opportunity to identify and select an industry to develop a proposal for their future course of action and find a work placement in order to gain hands-on experience.

Intermediate stage (one year duration)

At this stage the trainees will work within the selected organisation(s) and report back to the training supervisory team, to share their thinking and experience with the team and the students’ peers, to broaden their vision.

Final Stage (one year duration)

During this stage, trainees will develop their own business projects (for creating a small or medium size business) and implement them partially or fully, according to their resources and within the legal framework and immigration rules of the country. Those who are interested in big businesses or already part of a large company will explore and redefine the activities of their business, on basis of strategic knowledge management principles.

Study and learning process

  • Classes in English language, business communication and accounting
  • Workshops (covering marketing, management and interpersonal skills development)
  • Students must produce a reflective diary
  • Individuals must make presentations to the group and respond to their questions They must also take part in regular seminars
  • Students must complete a “Command task” (to hold a meeting with a group of a minimum 5 and a maximum 10 people)
  • Students must complete Field work and desk research about their selected industry (developing personal records)
  • Students will be expected to gain practical work experience in their selected industry
  • There will be regular Tutorials with the director of training
  • Students interested in this programme must start from the foundation stage; there will be no exemptions, because of the nature and objectives of the training course
